Designing Beyond Trends: A Los Gatos Kitchen Remodel Made for the Homeowners
Design trends can be a great source of inspiration. But when it comes to remodeling your home, the most successful spaces aren’t necessarily the ones that look like the latest Instagram trend. They’re the ones that reflect the people who live there.
For this Los Gatos kitchen remodel, the homeowners knew what they liked. They loved dark colors and wanted a kitchen with personality. They also knew their existing kitchen wasn’t working for the way their family lived.
The result? A kitchen with a better layout, more functional storage and personal details woven throughout the design.
The Kitchen Wish List
The homeowners came to Gridley with three main challenges:
- The formal dining room wasn’t being used. Instead, the family relied on their breakfast nook for everything from meals and homework to everyday gathering. The existing kitchen peninsula only comfortably accommodated one person.
- The kitchen was too small. The tight layout made it difficult for more than one person to comfortably cook or move through the space.
- The layout created an awkward transition into the home. An oversized AV closet near the entry forced people to zigzag their way toward the breakfast nook, making the space feel disconnected and unwelcoming.
They didn’t just need a prettier kitchen. They needed a kitchen that worked better for their family.
A Smarter Use of Existing Space
Rather than adding square footage to the home, the Gridley team looked at how the existing space could work harder. The solution was to expand the kitchen into the underused formal dining room. This created room for a large island where the family could have breakfast, work on homework and gather throughout the day. The existing breakfast nook could then take on a new role as a comfortable spot for family dinners and relaxing together at the end of the day.
By rethinking the layout, Gridley was able to give the homeowners more functional kitchen space without changing the footprint of their home.
Anticipating the Challenges Before Construction
A kitchen remodel can look straightforward on paper and still present plenty of challenges once the walls start coming down. In this project, the large window across the back of the home presented a design challenge.
It was a beautiful architectural feature, but its placement and width affected how the plumbing vent pipes would be installed, which required some early coordination between Gridley’s interior designers and Project Managers before construction began. With a collaborative, same-team approach, we developed details that created a seamless transition around the window and met local building codes.
That’s one of the advantages of an integrated design-build approach: designers, trades and construction professionals can work together early to identify challenges and find solutions before they become problems in the field.
Designing a Kitchen That Doesn’t Look Like Everyone Else’s
The homeowners had a clear preference: they loved dark colors. Their home already featured dark walls, dark floors and dark furniture. But they had also realized that too much of a good thing could make the home feel heavy.
The goal wasn’t to convince them to choose a lighter, more conventional kitchen. It was to find the right balance. Gridley’s design team introduced lighter gray walls and character-grade hard maple flooring to warm up the darker elements. The natural variation in the maple brought together rich brown, warm taupe, light brown and subtle gray tones. Those colors worked beautifully with the gray walls and darker gray cabinetry, creating contrast and warmth without losing the mood the homeowners loved.
The result wasn’t a kitchen designed around what was trending. It was a kitchen designed around the homeowners’ taste.
A Personal Detail at the Heart of the Kitchen
Some of the most meaningful design choices don’t come from a trend at all. The homeowner shared a special connection with her father around hexagon shapes. That inspired the custom backsplash detail above the range, where hexagonal tile became a decorative focal point and a subtle reminder of someone important to her.
It’s a small detail, but it’s what makes the kitchen personal.
Making the Kitchen Work Harder
The remodel also focused on the everyday details that make a kitchen easier to live in. The homeowners selected high-end appliances, including a 48-inch Wolf range, Bosch dishwasher and 48-inch Sub-Zero French-door refrigerator, giving them plenty of capacity for cooking, food storage and cleanup.
A smart kitchen faucet adds another layer of convenience. The homeowners can use Google or Alexa to tell the faucet how much water to dispense, making everyday tasks a little easier.
Storage was also carefully planned to keep countertops clear and make frequently used items easier to access. Cabinet features include:
- Spice organizers
- Knife organizers
- Pull-outs
- Pot and pan lid storage
- Additional cabinet organizers
These details may not be the first things you notice in a finished kitchen, but they’re the things that can make a remodeled kitchen feel dramatically better to use every day.
