Gridley Designers

What Makes a Great Interior Designer?

When you’re investing in a home remodel, you want more than someone with an eye for beautiful finishes. You want someone who understands how your family lives, anticipates challenges before they arise, and has the experience to uncover smart solutions you may never have considered.

That’s what makes a great interior designer.

Lisa Doyle, CID, Design Team Leader

At Gridley Company, we believe expertise isn’t something you achieve once. It’s something you continue to build throughout your career. That’s why we’re proud to celebrate a recent milestone for our Senior Interior Designer and Design Team Leader, Lisa Doyle, who recently earned her designation as a Certified Interior Designer (CID) through the California Council for Interior Design Certification (CCIDC).

With more than 15 years of experience in interior design and over a decade specializing in design-build remodeling and custom home renovations, Lisa has already helped countless homeowners transform the way they live in their homes. Earning her CID designation isn’t the beginning of her expertise. It’s another example of her commitment to continually learning, growing, and providing the highest level of service to every client.

What inspired you to pursue your Certified Interior Designer designation, and what does this achievement mean to you?

Lisa: “Pursuing my Certified Interior Designer designation was a natural extension of my commitment to creating spaces that are beautiful, safe, and functional. I wanted to deepen my technical knowledge, strengthen my understanding of building codes, and uphold the highest professional standards. Earning this designation validates years of education, experience, and continuous learning while reinforcing the trust my clients place in me. It is both a personal milestone and a professional responsibility, reflecting my dedication to delivering thoughtful, code-compliant, and client-centered design solutions that enhance the way people live.“

A Commitment to Professional Excellence

The Certified Interior Designer (CID) designation is a legally recognized professional title in California awarded to individuals who meet specific education and experience requirements, pass a comprehensive certification exam, and commit to maintaining high ethical and professional standards.

A Certified Interior Designer has demonstrated knowledge in areas such as:

  • California building codes
  • Space planning
  • Accessibility requirements
  • Life safety considerations

Of course, expertise isn’t built through a single certification. It’s developed over years of experience, collaboration, and a commitment to continuous learning. As building codes evolve and best practices change, designers who invest in ongoing education are better equipped to guide homeowners through a successful remodel.

How has continuing your education helped you better guide homeowners through the remodeling process?

Lisa: “Continuing my education has given me a stronger understanding of building codes, construction methods, materials, and industry best practices, allowing me to guide homeowners with greater confidence throughout the remodeling process. It helps me anticipate challenges, communicate realistic expectations, and make informed recommendations that balance design, functionality, safety, and budget. Most importantly, it enables me to be a trusted resource, helping clients make decisions that lead to successful, well-executed projects.“

For homeowners, that commitment translates into real benefits. It means working with a designer who understands how thoughtful planning influences every stage of a project—from creating functional layouts and navigating California building requirements to anticipating challenges before construction begins.

Ultimately, it’s about giving homeowners greater confidence that their project is being designed with both creativity and technical expertise in mind.

Great Design Goes Beyond Aesthetics

Lisa and Vivienne

Many people think interior design is primarily about selecting finishes and furnishings. While those decisions certainly shape the final look of a home, they’re only one piece of the puzzle.

Great design begins with listening.

It means understanding how a family lives, identifying what’s not working in their current home, improving functionality, planning for the future, and uncovering opportunities that homeowners may not have considered on their own.

What’s one piece of advice you would give homeowners before they begin planning a remodel?

Lisa: “Before starting a remodel, invest time in planning. Clearly define your goals, priorities, and budget, and work with qualified professionals early in the process. A well-planned project helps avoid costly changes, keeps expectations realistic, and results in a space that truly reflects your lifestyle and long-term needs. Good communication and preparation are the foundation of a successful remodel.”

That’s where experience and technical expertise make a difference. A knowledgeable designer can often see possibilities others miss—whether it’s rethinking a floor plan, improving traffic flow, maximizing natural light, incorporating hidden storage, or finding creative solutions that make a home feel larger, more functional, and better suited to the way a family lives.

At Gridley Company, our designers work alongside project managers, electricians, plumbers and other trade professionals throughout the entire design-build process. That collaboration allows ideas to be explored from multiple perspectives, refined early in the design phase, and thoughtfully executed during construction. The result is a home that’s not only beautiful, but functions better than you imagined.

Her new Certified Interior Designer designation is another milestone in an already accomplished career and another example of our commitment to continually raising the bar.

Congratulations, Lisa!

We’re incredibly proud of Lisa for earning her Certified Interior Designer designation.
