Interviewing a Remodeler? Start Here.
Choosing the right remodeling partner isn’t just about pretty photos or a price tag, it’s about asking the right questions. Our designer, Vivienne Nguyen, has sat through hundreds of first meetings, and she knows exactly what homeowners ask… and what they don’t always think to ask (but should).
So we asked her to share it all, the real questions that shape a smooth, successful remodel and the behind-the-scenes insight that helps you choose with confidence from day one.
Q: Can we live in our home during construction?
A: Yes! You absolutely can live in your home during construction (a lot of our clients do!).
If you stay, we can phase the project so it feels manageable, maybe renovating a smaller bathroom first so you always have one working space, then moving into bigger areas like the kitchen or primary suite. We also set up temporary kitchens so you can avoid eating out everyday. Some families love watching the transformation happen, others rent short-term to avoid the dust and noise. There’s no right answer, it just depends on your comfort level, budget, and lifestyle. We’ll plan it around you.
Q: Where can a remodel budget go off track?
A: Most remodel budgets go sideways for two big reasons: changes and surprises.
First, scope changes. When design decisions shift, or scope increases after construction starts, costs can climb quickly. This is why our process includes so much upfront planning and design; we’re helping you to avoid these last minute pivots!
Second, the unknowns. Once we open up walls, we sometimes uncover things like old wiring, plumbing issues, or structural fixes that need attention. These discoveries can feel unexpected, but they’re a normal part of remodeling. The good news is our team comes prepared with smart, practical solutions and walks you through options so you can make confident decisions and keep everything moving forward comfortably.
Q: How long does design actually take?
A: The timeline honestly depends on the scope and complexity of your project. Bigger spaces, more detailed layouts, multiple cost check-ins, and how quickly decisions come together on materials all play a role in how fast we move. Once we understand your goals and what we’re designing, we’ll map out a clear, step-by-step schedule so you always know what’s happening next.
Q: What is a preliminary cost meeting and how do allowances work?
A: We know one of the biggest concerns when building a home is understanding costs before making a big commitment, and that is exactly why we provide allowances and a preliminary cost estimate before getting deep into the details! That estimate is an actual reflection of the “move in ready” cost, including all things needed for your remodel from demo, to tile and permit fees! We’re using allowances as smart budget placeholders that keep your investment on track while we refine selections.
Q: What do families underestimate about living through a remodel?
A: The biggest thing families underestimate? How disruptive the day-to-day can feel.
Remodeling is exciting, but it’s also noisy, dusty, and full of moving parts. Your routines will get shaken up a bit. Many families find themselves returning to the office for work and enjoying activities out of the house, like going to see a movie or even taking a short vacation. We realize change can be uncomfortable, which is why we’re big on planning and communication. You’ll have a dedicated project manager from start to finish, and you won’t be chasing trades or juggling schedules, Gridley Company handles all of that. Our goal isn’t just a beautiful finished space. It’s getting you there with clarity, organization, and way less stress along the way.
