When we first met our clients, they came to us with a clear and exciting vision: expand their cramped primary suite, refresh the kitchen and laundry room, and top it all off with an outdoor kitchen under a dreamy pergola. They were no strangers to remodeling as they had been through a major one before and were ready to dive back in, eyes wide open.
What they didn’t yet know was how Gridley Company’s design-build process would turn that vision into a full-blown transformation, and make the journey not only seamless—but fun.
Where it All Began…
Take a look at the “Before”, a primary bathroom limited to a single sink, a dark and underwhelming primary bedroom, and an outdoor deck that was more forgotten space than inviting escape. Each area was full of potential, but definitely in need of some serious design love.
The Big Picture
As with every design-build remodel, we kicked things of with the Schematic Design Phase! Think of this phase as dream-mapping, where we explore all the different possibilities to check off each
item of our client’s wish list. We’re exploring what is and isn’t possible, and how to make it happen. From new rear additions for the primary suite to reimagined cabinetry layouts in the kitchen and laundry, and an upgraded hall bath, every version checked the boxes on their wish list.
Design in The Details
Once the big-picture plans were in place, the real fun began, designing the details! Gridley Company’s dedicated design team continues the partnership with our clients during the Design Development Phase, to personalize every corner of their home. From the very beginning, we curated material and fixture selections specifically for their style and needs—so they never had to wander a tile showroom unless they wanted to. Each meeting felt like a creative milestone, thanks to immersive 3D walkthroughs, finish and fixture palettes, and conceptual renderings that made it easy to visualize how the space would come together. From showstopping tile patterns and custom built-ins to artful lighting layers and personality-packed cabinetry, every decision was made with intention. What could have been an overwhelming flood of choices turned into a fun, inspiring journey—led by a team they could trust.
A Little Project Creep
Of course, no great remodel story is complete without a little something we lovingly call project creep. It started innocently, just a few small upgrades here and there. Then, before we knew it, we’re swapping every bit of trim for custom craftsman-style detailing and finally saying goodbye to that stubborn old cast-iron tub in the hall bath. It had clung to its spot like a champion, surviving meeting after meeting, until it was the last man standing. But eventually, even it had to go. And while we were busy dreaming up the interiors, the vision for the outdoors was evolving, too. That initial idea of a pergola? Let’s just say it got a serious upgrade. As the plans grew in detail and scale, so did the ambition for the outdoor spaces, becoming more expansive, more thoughtful, and far more magical than we originally imagined.
A Pergola Pivot & Happy Surprise
As the pergola concepts became more grand, an unexpected challenge emerged: we were becoming more and more limited on our available lot coverage limits. That left us with a tough decision—should we use the remaining space to expand the primary suite, or reserve it for the dream pergola? In the end, the pergola had to take a graceful bow out. Was it disappointing? Of course. But in classic Gridley fashion, what first felt like a setback quickly turned into a spark of creativity. That single design twist opened the door to something even more exciting—and what unfolded next transformed not just the outdoor plans, but the entire experience of the home.
Outdoor Spaces, Reimagined
That small speed bump in the process launched a complete reimagining of the home’s exterior spaces through collaboration with a talented local landscape designer. Together, Gridley Company’s design-build team partnered with Bergez & Associates Design Studio to weave the indoor and outdoor into one seamless experience for our client. Together, we didn’t just design a yard, we choreographed an experience. Patios became extensions of the living room. The outdoor kitchen felt like it belonged right next to the indoor one. Hardscaped walkways didn’t just connect spaces, they told a story, gently guiding you from a morning coffee nook to a dinner party under the stars. Outdoor kitchen and patios began to feel like living spaces, thoughtfully hardscaped paths felt like hallways, bridging the transitions from dining, cooking and relaxing spaces. Every material, every detail, was chosen with intention. Exterior finishes mirrored the interior design palette, tying the entire home together with a sense of harmony that you can feel the moment you step outside.
