4 Steps to Remodel Success
Thinking of remodeling your home – maybe your kitchen, bathroom or even a full layout refresh, but unsure where to start? You’re not alone. A successful remodel doesn’t begin with demolition, it begins with preparation. Before a builder swings a single hammer, there are some key things you can do to set the stage for a smoother, more cost-effective experience, with some simple strategic planning. Our 4-Step Checklist gives you the information you need to confidently prepare for your remodel!

Step 1: Define your Goals
It’s important to understand the main issues driving your need to remodel. There are three questions every homeowner should ask themselves before they start their search for a remodel partner.- Question 1: “Why am I remodeling?” You may find your answer is that you are seeking more space, a better layout or an updated look.
- Question 2: “What is not working?” and write these answers down to be prepared to share them with your design-build team.
- Question 3: “What are my Must-Have items, and my Nice-To Have items?” Consider these and be ready to separate them into two lists, from most to least important. Having this clarity will help you communicate better with designers and avoid scope creep as the project moves forward.
Step 2: Set a Budget
This step can feel like the most overwhelming—and that’s completely normal. If you haven’t done a remodel before (or in a while), it can be tough to know what kind of budget makes sense. But here’s the good news: setting a budget doesn’t mean you need to land on an exact number right away. Start by thinking about what you’re comfortable spending overall. Keep in mind that it’s perfectly natural to invest more in a transformative design, or stick to a lower range for updates that are simpler but still make a big impact. Next, consider how you plan to finance the project—whether through savings, a loan, or a combination of both. Finally, think about the level of finish you’re aiming for: something modest, high-end, or a mix of both.Step 3: Get Inspired
Now that you know what you are remodeling, start building a sense of what you love, and what you don’t love. Many of our clients like to save and share pictures from Pinterest, Instagram, Houzz or home design blogs. Traveling a lot this year? Take note and pictures of special features you find in your hotel that you must have or even want to avoid! Collecting these images and information will help you communicate your vision to your design-build team and stay focused, once you’re ready to get started.
Step 4. Choose The Right Team
When it comes to remodeling your home, there are two main approaches: Design-Build and Design-Bid-Build. Each offers a different experience, and there’s no one-size-fits-all answer—it really depends on the type of process and support you’re looking for.
